After the reboot, we got the new app downloaded after several attempts I kept clicking "download now," nothing would happen, then I'd click "try again" and still nothing happened. First I had to reboot the computer, and had to do "force shutdown" because the Kindle app uninstall process was still hung and was blocking the shutdown. The man called right away and was able to talk me through updating the app. There was no response to any clicks on anything, anywhere on the screen.Īt this point the online chat rep said he would have a tech guy telephone me. I tried to kill the uninstall through "end task" on Task Manager, and even that did not get a response. The uninstall process started, but then it hung, and when I tried clicking to get it going again, my computer froze up. Then we tried using the "uninstall programs" feature from the Start menu to get rid of the old app. However, the instructions the rep gave me to select xx from the drop-down menu and do so-and-so did not match what I was seeing on my screen, and some things he told me to click were disabled (grayed out). I was told to "deregister" my old Kindle app, in other words, uninstall it. Unfortunately, the attempt to update it took me down a rat hole. I asked how to get the updated version of the app. The rep said all my Kindle purchases were stored in my Amazon account, so not to worry about that. So I went on the Amazon customer support chat line. Please update to a newer version."Įxpired? Huh? I didn't know that a free app would "expire." What happened to the older Kindle books I'd bought, and where did my three new books go? I went to the Amazon Kindle help pages, but could not find an answer for my particular problem. I got an error message: "This version of the Kindle app has expired and can no longer be used. I bought three Kindle books and then went to my app to make sure they had been downloaded properly. I downloaded the app several months ago and it was working perfectly until yesterday. I use Kindle for PC on a Windows 7 desktop computer. It turned out to be an issue related to MS Windows. Posting here in case my experience can help anyone having a similar problem. I guess we’ll find out soon enough when they start rolling out the 1.I had a serious problem yesterday with my Kindle for PC app, and I had to spend a long time with Amazon customer support to resolve it. It makes it sound like Windows 7 users won’t be able to download new purchases at all using the latest version of the Kindle for PC app. Visit kindle-desktop-requirements for more information. Please upgrade to the latest version of Windows to continue receiving updates and read new books. You can continue reading the books you already own. The Kindle App for Android is a lot more developed than the PC app, and it adds several additional features, so Amazon might eventually want move toward using the Android app on Windows computers instead.Īs noted by jhowell in post #10 of that thread, the next version of Kindle for PC, version 1.32, comes with an ominous note about Windows 7 that is open to interpretation: Windows 11 is going to support Android apps, and they’re going to be using Amazon’s appstore for apps. There’s a thread at MobileRead with a discussion about the topic of what could happen to the Kindle PC app moving forward. There’s still the download via USB option for Kindle owners, and hopefully that’s not going away any time soon, but this could complicate things a bit. It’s unclear exactly what this means at this point for Windows 7 users that use the Kindle App for PC to download Kindle ebooks.įor one thing, if Amazon discontinues downloading ebooks using the Kindle App for PC it could make it more difficult to remove DRM from Kindle ebooks to be able to read them on non-Kindle devices.
